Protein VS Moisture – What Does My Hair Need?

For a lot of people who lighten or colour their hair, a common hair concern is damage. And there are so many hair care products and “trends” out there these days that knowing what products are best for you can be super overwhelming. Amongst research, you may find there are two different types of treatments on the market to help with damaged hair – protein treatments VS moisture treatments. So, how do you know if your hair needs moisture or protein? Well in this blog we cover all the variables, so you can look no further and work out exactly what your hair craves & needs.

What is the Difference Between Protein & Moisture Products?

Protein strengthens & repairs the hair, helping it grow longer and stronger.

Moisture nourishes & restores hydration in hair, bringing it back to life.

Does My Hair Need Protein or Moisture?

Generally, for blonde & coloured hair, we recommend focusing mainly on moisture-based products. This is because when we lighten or colour your hair, it tends to dry it out. So restoring your locks with moisture is extremely important. However we do also recommend incorporating a protein treatment once a week to once a fortnight, depending on how often you wash your hair. This will encourage growth & bring back strength to your locks, which is a must for us when colouring or completing any chemical services.

When You Should Consider More Protein

Although we usually recommend focusing on moisture-based products with the addition of protein, for some people, that’s not quite the case. If you find you have a lot of split ends and breakage, or your hair doesn’t seem to be growing and is splitting at the ends, you may be best to solely focus on protein products. This is so your hair can receive the treatment it needs to build back strength, and repair the damage that you might be dealing with.

To tell the difference between breakage VS new hair growth, as a generic rule if the short pieces of hair have little white dots on the end, or has any bits that split, this is breakage. If it is just a single strand of hair that softens at the end – this is new growth.

Another reason to incorporate more protein in your hair routine would be if you are planning on having/or have had a big colour change that involves lightening your hair, as this will prepare/repair any damage that might come from the major change.

How to Know if You Are Using Too Much Protein

There is a fine line between using the right amount of protein vs too much, and it’s important to get it right otherwise it can be even more damaging to your hair. Using too much protein can have the reverse effects, as a build up of the wrong type of protein can cause your locks to turn brittle, limp and lifeless.

So, ultimately, it is best to check with a professional as to what hair care routine will be best for you and your hair goals. Come by the salon to chat with us or book in for a free 15 minute consultation where we can go through an in depth routine & treatment plan.

Protein VS Moisture - What Does My Hair Need? -

So, What is a Peptide?

Peptides are essentially small chains of amino acids, which cause changes in cell behaviour in your hair to stimulate follicle growth & promote natural hair production.

What Are Amino Acids?

Amino acids are organic compounds that form together to create protein.

So to put all of this simply, peptides are small chains of amino acids that form together to create natural proteins, which then stimulate natural hair production. So this treatment is the only clinically proven peptide treatment to repair hair & reverse chemical/heat damage.

How Does K18 Work?

You can experience the best of K18 in a salon before a colour or chemical service. Then, continue your active care at home — watch and feel your hair transform with every use. After your treatment in salon, use the take home treatment for the first 4-6 consecutive shampoos. Apply to freshly shampooed, towel-dried hair, do not condition. Apply the treatment from mids to ends of the hair, leaving it in for 4 minutes before applying any other product. Do not rinse out. After this period, use once a month as replacement of conditioner, using a non-protein, moisture based conditioner or treatment in between.
